I know I haven’t posted here in a long time since I’ve been in college, which is awesome so far. Anyways, I had a question about my laptop (Dell XPS 13) and audio/microphone devices.

I’m trying to use two different audio/microphone devices at the same time using a splitter. The splitter is supposed to take a microphone input and an audio input, and combine them into the single jack on the XPS 13. For the audio, I am using a pair of generic earbuds with no inline microphone, which has a generic jack (with 2 black lines). For the microphone, I am using a gaming headset with a built-in microphone, which has a jack with 3 black lines.

I want to be using the earbuds for audio, while using the gaming headset purely for the microphone. However, no matter what I plug into the jack, I only see the default “speakers” or “microphone” using “Intel Smart Sound Technology.” I have no way to select the external microphone, as it does not detect it. It’s kind of difficult to explain, so if you require any more specifics, let me know.

Here’s something you don’t see every day. Lamborghini pizza car.

I think this car belongs to Rob Ferretti of SuperSpeeders and Gotham Dream Cars

I believe it does, because the owner was wearing a Gotham shirt and was talking about SuperSpeeders.

Its a matter of configuring the inputs to be inline with the bands (black lines). You aren’t going to get what you want with a splitter.

Does your XPS even have a combined audio/mic jack? My M6600 has two separate ports.

my XPS had a separate mic input and headphone output.

also, IIRC, didnt they have a mic built into them?

Yes, but the mic picks up the sound of typing and mouse clicks. Trying to use it for gaming, you see.

It has a single port, but I have used the gaming headset on its own before, with a working microphone. So I’m fairly certain it’s a combined.

Could you explain that more?

ah.

a legit set of headphones either has 2 plugs (one for mic, one for headphones) or runs off a USB.

also, intel smartsound is useless.

The gaming headset came with a green/pink splitter, but that was a female to male splitter (single plug in, two plugs out). I bought a two plugs in, one out splitter.

Gotcha. Hammerhead is posting my next thoughts so I’ll just lurk that :)

Your computer needs to be able to recognize the left/right and input channels on the correct bands for you to be able to interface it properly with your computer. Your best best would be to cut up the earphones and mic and splice all the wires together on the cable for the headset using an online guide.

I guess I wasn’t looking at the right guy then...

Could I do that DIY thing using the splitter? The headphones/headset are kinda expensive and I don’t want to risk it with the actual cables.

Or using separate extenders?

Plug and unplug things a million times. Change settings to everything you can think of. Try the same things over and over again and eventually, even though you swear you’ve tried that exact set up 20+ times already it’ll start working. Don’t ever change a thing again.

That's how this kind of stuff always goes for me.

Does how well I solder the splice affect sound quality?

The trick is insulation, to keep the wires isulated from each other. The amount and quality of splice wont matter terribly.
